Applicants are sought for up to three temporary full-time positions to support field research on an oceanographic expedition to Antarctica. The position involves collection of a variety of seawater, particle, and sediment samples for 23 distinct research projects, all involving traces metals and natural isotopic systems. These positions will report to the GEOTRACES GP17-ANT cruise management team, who will supervise them on board. The cruise will leave Punta Arenas, Chile on approx. Nov. 24, 2023 and end at Littleton, NZ on approx. Jan 30, 2024. The position will also require attendance at a cruise planning meeting and a 5-day training session, both in Norfolk Virginia. Quarantine may be required, in the US or in Chile, or both, immediately before the cruise departs, in order to avoid COVID-19 infections on the ship.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Successful candidates should have previous shipboard research experience, ability to work on deck safely, physical and metal stamina, some familiarity with trace metal contamination avoidance procedures, good teamwork and communication skills, attention to detail and written records, organized work habits, and an ability to maintain good cheer over a long cruise.
A Bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant scientific field and at least one year of research experience in chemical oceanography is required.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:
Selected candidates will be required to undergo a complete medical and dental exam, with any expenses covered by management, in spring 2023 and be deemed physically qualified by the US Antarctic Program medical staff.
Candidates should be able to lift and carry 40-pound boxes of seawater samples and walk for 100 feet on a moving ship.
