The Berkeley Lab's Energy Geosciences Division has an exciting opportunity for a Postdoctoral Fellow to work on geochemical transport modeling.
In this role, you will develop reaction networks for complex subsurface geochemical systems (e.g. reactions between shales and hydraulic fracturing fluids) to simulate and predict the dynamic evolution of fluid chemistry, mineral composition and system properties (e.g. porosity and permeability). You will collaborate closely with experimentalists and contribute research to elucidate geochemical controls on the alteration of fractured porous media at the pore and micro-continuum scales, and establish a model framework that accounts for small scale geochemical processes in reservoir scale production modeling.
What You Will Do:
Develop reaction networks for geochemical processes operating in oil and gas reservoirs (e.g. rock-fluid interaction in hydraulic fracturing systems, high salinity systems)
Compile reaction data (e.g. kinetic and surface area) from fluid chemistry, imaging and spectroscopic characterization and laboratory experiments.
Perform numerical simulations to predict the geochemical evolution of subsurface systems of interest and the impacts on the physical-chemical properties of the host material.
Author peer-reviewed journal articles and technical reports.
What is Required:
Ph.D. in Geosciences, Environmental Engineering, or related fields.
Experience in Geochemistry and Mineralogy.
Ability to identify and develop new research areas and proposals.
Ability to collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of scientists.
Ability to author peer-reviewed journal publications and technical reports.
What We Desire:
Experience in reactive transport modeling or reactive transport code development (e.g. CrunchFlow).
Experience in laboratory experiments of rock-fluid interactions.
Experience with complex geochemical systems, such as mineral systems rich in organic matter and redox systems with iron- or sulfur- species.

This is a full time, M-F, exempt from overtime pay (monthly paid), 1 year postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 4 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.
