We are seeking an energetic and proactive researcher to support the operations of the mass spectrometry and associated laser ablation systems of the Monash Isotopia Laboratory. The Analytical Specialist (Research & Development) will work on a range of projects and build research capacity within the school. As a part of this role, you will perform a range of tasks to support the Pulse of the Earth research project and associated fields of geochemical research.
The position will maintain existing facilities and develop new techniques in mass spectrometry as well as collaborate with other analytical experts to support the research and teaching efforts of the School. This includes overseeing and undertaking testing, equipment maintenance, developing operating procedures, data analysis, computing, operational and budget planning, while ensuring a compliant and safe operating environment.
You will be a subject matter expert in the area and perform maintenance and development of equipment in the lab. With your operational excellence, you will also analyse, interpret and minimise risk: this includes developing innovative methodology and supporting world-leading instrumentation!
Skills and knowledge:
Applicants require an excellent understanding of working in a laboratory facility, with a focus on operational excellence, with expertise in isotope geochemistry clean laboratory procedures and proficiency in operation of Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) Mass Spectrometers (MS) and laser ablation systems. Ideally, you will have a doctoral qualification in relevant fields of geochemistry, chemistry, mass spectrometry or physics with a substantial geochemical component along with extensive research and publication experience.
You should also be able to predict the safety issues and respond to them in an efficient manner. Your excellent communication and interpersonal skills will be valuable to the role.
