JUNIOR SPECIALIST - EARTH & PLANETARY SCIENCE Our Earth & Planetary Science Laboratory invites applications for a Junior Specialist position. Our laboratory focuses on measuring the isotopic composition of gases, included those with multiple rare isotopes. We dominantly focus on the measurement of CO2 and methane from a variety of settings to understand the formational conditions (including temperature) of the samples. This work is used to reconstruct past temperatures (e.g. paleoclimate), modern biogeochemical cycles, and fundamental processes associated with how key compounds on Earth. This position will be at UC Berkeley and reports to Prof. Daniel Stolper. This is a four month full-time position with an anticipated start date of February 18, 2019 through June 15, 2019.
Responsibilities: In collaboration with the Principal Investigator and lab members, the Jr. Specialist will carry out geochemical and isotope geochemical research. When appropriate, the Jr Specialist will be included as an author on academic papers, contributing to the writing when required. She or he will be directly engaged with the research group, under the direction of Professor Stolper, on the design of the work, how the research will be done, and analysis of the resulting data. The person will work independently on assigned tasks. Laboratory duties will include, but are not limited to, sample preparation, such as weighing and loading of samples, preparation of standards, preparation of solutions, work with vacuum glass lines, glass blowing work, work with high temperature furnaces, running of a state-of-the-art mass spectrometer and associated custom-made carbonate extraction line. Some lab management duties may be assigned.
Basic Qualifications Required (Required at the time of application): Bachelor's Degree or equivalent international degree.
Additional Required Qualifications (By the start date of the job): The successful candidate will have at least 4 months of laboratory employment experience involving sample preparation.
Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree or equivalent international degree in Earth Science or Integrative Biology. Demonstrated attention to detail; organizational and problem-solving skills; the ability to communicate effectively. The successful candidate will have experience involving sample preparation, such as weighing and loading of samples, preparation of standards, preparation of solutions, work with vacuum glass lines, glass blowing work, work with high temperature furnaces, running of a state-of-the-art mass spectrometer and associated custom-made carbonate extraction line.
