Advertised Summary Job Description: This position is located on the Lamont Campus in Rockland County, NY.
Research Assistant assisting with deep sea sample preparation and analysis including processing on lab testing devices and instruments. Produces data reflecting the results of physical properties and geochemical analyses of sediment core samples. Conducts sediment analysis using standard lab techniques. Process resulting data on computer. Be responsible for lab oversight and maintenance of all minor equipment and expendable supplies.
Process deep sea samples and/or prepared samples for research, including washing samples, using various scientific instruments such as: MST core logger, sedigraph, coulometer (bulk carbonate analyses), SEM, trace element analyzer, core splitter, XRF core logger, microscopes, and other laboratory instruments as required. Produce data reflecting the results of physical property and geochemical analyses of sediment core samples.
Assist Repository Curator with sampling sediment cores. For new cores entering Repository, sample where appropriate including splitting/photographing/logging cores.
Assist PI Raymo and Curator Anest with data management tasks including submitting data sets to data repositories.
Be responsible for maintenance and upkeep of lab supplies and minor equipment.
Contribute to Repository social media stream and public education/outreach efforts in the Repository.
General Minimum Qualifications: College diploma and some lab experience required.
Good written and verbal English skills required.
Must be detail oriented and physically able to carry cores weighing +50 lbs.
Additional Specific Minimum Qualifications:
Preferred Qualifications: College courses in science, math, or physics preferred.
Technical experience required and capability with electronic equipment with computer interface, also preferred.
