The Earth and Environmental Science Area of Berkeley Lab seeks a hydrologist to develop novel data analysis and simulation approaches, and to jointly use them to understand how hydrological systems respond to perturbations, with a particular focus on hyporheic zone processes. This is a 2-year term, career-track position that may be extended to five years and/or promoted to career based on continued performance and available funding.
Develop new numerical approaches to simulate hyporheic zone hydrology driven biogeochemical processes
Develop new statistical approaches to mine complex and diverse watershed datasets and identify a range of spatiotemporal patterns and trends in said datasets
Acquire, analyze using laboratory methods, integrate and interpret hydrological, geochemical and biological watershed measurements
Using measurements and developed models, explore how water resources associated with watershed and/or their subsystems respond to environmental change, potentially including droughts, extreme precipitation events, and fires
Engage as a member of a large, multidisciplinary research team that includes geochemists, hydrologists, geophysicists and computational scientists;
Publish results in peer-reviewed journals
Communicate research results via presentations at scientific conferences
Identify new research directions
Seek funding opportunities, write research proposals
Lead projects and project tasks, including technical scope, budget, staffing and interactions with funding agency.
Conduct lab, field and office work under established safety guidelines
Additional Responsibilities may include:
Supervise and mentor technical staff
Develop patents and perform technology transfer
Scientific community, Laboratory and/or DOE service
Advanced degree in hydrology, environmental engineering or related field
Demonstrated knowledge of watershed behavior and challenges in predicting future function
Demonstrated experience in the development and use of advanced models to investigate hyporheic zone processes.
Demonstrated ability to acquire, analyze and interpret water quality measurements and other field datasets
Demonstrated ability to develop scientific manuscripts, leading to outstanding record of original and high-quality publications
Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate complex scientific findings and vision to range of audiences
High likelihood to thrive within a large, multi-disciplinary research team.
Ph.D. in hydrology, environmental engineering, or related field
Experience in writing research grants
Experience in leading and managing projects, including budgets, deliverables and staff
Experience mentoring and supervising early career technical staff.
Salary is commensurate with experience
Full-time, M-F, exempt from overtime
This position may require occasional travel, weekend, and after-hours work
Career Track (2 years) with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
