The Institute of Marine Sciences at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for the position of Assistant or Associate Project Scientist in coccolithophores biostratigraphy and paleoceanography, under the direction of Dr. Adina Paytan. The candidate will contribute to research on the ecology of extant coccolithophores; biostratigraphy using coccolithophotes; paleoceanographic and paleoclimate reconstructions in the Pliocene, Pleistocene and Holocene; and geochemical analyses of coccolithophores. The position will require the candidate to prepare manuscripts and proposals for publication and work collaboratively as a member of a diverse research team that includes faculty, staff, professional scientists, graduate and undergraduate students. The selected candidate will ideally be experienced with extracting and preparing coccoliths for geochemical and isotopic analyses; separating coccolithophores based on size; development of analyses of size-fractionated coccoliths; and laser ablation ICP-MS for analyzing coccoliths and other micro-fossils.
We have a preference for candidates with expertise in coccolithophores biostratigraphy and biogeochemistry.
SALARY: $61,800 - 72,100 annually, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in earth sciences or ocean sciences; a minimum of five years postdoctoral laboratory research experience with identifying extant and fossil coccolithophores and conducting statistical data analysis; documented experience of biostratigraphy of coccoliths since the Cretaceous; and a demonstrated record of manuscript publication.

TERM OF APPOINTMENT: The initial appointment is for one year, with the possibility of reappointment. The appointment will be part-time (50%), with the potential to be increased to full-time (100%) dependent upon available funding. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon availability of funding.
